Flood watch issued for South Florida as heavy rain threatens urban flooding

A flood watch remains in effect across parts of South Florida, including Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties, as forecasters warn of prolonged rainfall and potential flooding risks. According to the National Weather Service, the alert was updated on Tuesday, April 7, with hazardous weather conditions expected to impact coastal and metropolitan areas throughout the day.

Forecasters predict widespread rainfall totals between 1 and 3 inches, with localized areas potentially receiving between 4 and 6 inches due to repeated thunderstorms. These conditions increase the likelihood of flooding in low-lying neighborhoods, urban locations with poor drainage, and areas near creeks and canals.

Cities identified as being at higher risk include Miami, Hialeah, Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, Miramar, Boca Raton, Jupiter, and Kendall. The National Weather Service has also issued a rip current statement for coastal Miami-Dade County, effective from 8:00 PM on Tuesday, April 7, through 8:00 PM on Thursday, April 9.

Weather officials indicate that showers and thunderstorms are likely to intensify later in the day, with additional rainfall amounts ranging from three-quarters of an inch to 1 inch in some areas. While the heavy rain raises concerns about localized flooding, meteorologists note it could provide relief to ongoing drought conditions affecting much of the state.

Approximately 79% of Florida is currently experiencing extreme to exceptional drought levels. Experts say the incoming rainfall may help ease these conditions, although the immediate focus remains on managing flood risks and ensuring public safety in vulnerable regions.
