Toxic Movie Review: Yash Shines in a Stylish Let-Down

Toxic Movie Review: Yash Shines in a Stylish Let-Down

Plot

Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-ups follows Raya, a powerful and unpredictable gangster whose criminal life is shaped by ambition, loyalty, love and psychological conflict. His relationships with Ganga, Rebecca, Nadia, Elizabeth and an enigmatic woman described as his “permanent” influence his journey. Meanwhile, Ticket—Raya’s volatile alter ego—threatens to take control of his mind.

Overview

Yash’s much-awaited return is visually ambitious and packed with stylish action. However, the film struggles to balance commercial entertainment with Geetu Mohandas’s experimental direction. Its complicated storytelling, uneven pace and underdeveloped female characters prevent it from becoming the groundbreaking gangster drama it promises to be.

Performances

Yash delivers a commanding dual performance as Raya and Ticket, combining his familiar screen presence with genuine emotional intensity. The confrontation between the two characters is among the film’s strongest moments. Nayanthara is powerful but underused, while Kiara Advani handles her character’s emotional transformation convincingly. Rukmini Vasanth shares appealing chemistry with Yash, although her role lacks development. Huma Qureshi and Tara Sutaria perform sincerely but receive limited material.

Technical Aspects

Rajeev Ravi’s cinematography is stunning, supported by elaborate production design and impressive art direction. The carefully constructed sets, lighting and compositions create a rich visual world. The circus ambush is the action highlight, featuring inventive choreography and effective use of Yash’s weapons training. Unfortunately, several other action scenes rely on conventional mass-film techniques.

Music

The background score adds scale and energy to Yash’s mass moments and the major action sequences. However, the music cannot consistently compensate for the film’s uneven emotional development and confused storytelling.

Editing

Ujwal Kulkarni’s editing is one of the film’s biggest weaknesses. Abrupt cuts, random transitions and hurried scene changes make the narrative difficult to follow. When the film slows down, the emotional scenes feel prolonged and insufficiently earned. With a runtime exceeding three hours, tighter editing could have significantly improved the experience.

Positives
  • Yash’s intense dual performance
  • Impressive cinematography and production design
  • Inventive circus ambush sequence
  • Strong performances from the female cast
  • Ambitious world-building and visual scale
Negatives
  • Complicated and unfocused screenplay
  • Abrupt, distracting editing
  • Excessive runtime and inconsistent pacing
  • Underwritten female characters
  • Confusion between mass and experimental cinema
  • Style frequently overshadows storytelling
Analysis

Toxic attempts to combine a mainstream gangster spectacle with psychological drama and unconventional filmmaking. The combination never becomes cohesive. Raya dominates nearly every narrative strand, leaving the much-promoted female perspective largely unexplored. Despite strong acting, impressive visuals and occasional flashes of exciting action, the film lacks the emotional clarity and narrative discipline needed to support its ambition.

Bottomline: Stylish Disappointment

Rating: 2.5/5
