US–Israel–Iran War | India assures adequate oil reserves amid Strait of Hormuz tensions

Amid escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia and growing concerns over potential disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, government sources have reassured citizens that India’s oil reserves and fuel stocks remain sufficient, urging the public not to panic or hoard essential petroleum products. Officials said the country currently maintains around 25 days of crude oil and petroleum products, including petrol and diesel, ensuring stability in the event of short-term supply disruptions. Liquefied petroleum gas inventories are estimated to be adequate for approximately 25 to 30 days, further strengthening the energy security framework.

Authorities noted that nearly 40 per cent of India’s oil imports transit through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical corridor for global oil trade situated between Iran and Oman. The narrow waterway accounts for a significant share of international crude oil supply and is often at the center of volatility in global oil prices during regional crises. However, officials emphasized that India’s import basket is geographically diversified, with the remaining 60 per cent sourced through alternative sea lanes and suppliers across the Americas, Africa and Russia. This diversification reduces dependence on a single chokepoint and mitigates the risk of supply disruption.

Government sources also highlighted that contingency plans are in place to manage logistical challenges if Gulf transit routes are affected. Alternative shipping passages, including routes via the Cape of Good Hope around southern Africa, remain operational, though they may involve longer transit times and higher freight costs. Energy planners are closely monitoring developments and coordinating with refiners and oil marketing companies to ensure uninterrupted availability of petroleum products.

In addition to commercial inventories, India’s strategic petroleum reserves provide an added buffer against external shocks. Officials reiterated that current fuel stocks are adequate and that energy security mechanisms are functioning as intended, underscoring that there is no immediate threat to crude oil supply or LPG availability across the country.
