Trump Yet To Approve US-Iran Ceasefire Extension Deal

Talks Move Closer To A Deal

The United States and Iran have made progress toward extending their ceasefire agreement, but President Donald Trump has not yet decided whether to approve the proposal, Vice President JD Vance said on Thursday, May 28. Speaking to reporters, Vance said both sides were still reviewing specific language in the agreement, even as US officials indicated that Washington and Tehran had reached an understanding in principle. He said the talks had moved forward, but described Trump’s final endorsement as still to be determined.

Nuclear Issues Remain Unresolved

Vance said the main unresolved issues involve Iran’s nuclear programme, including its highly enriched uranium stockpile and the broader question of enrichment. He said US and Iranian negotiators were continuing discussions on those points and added that Tehran appeared to be negotiating in good faith so far. The vice president cautioned, however, that a final ceasefire deal has not been secured and that more progress is needed before the two sides can settle the remaining disputes.

Ceasefire Holds Amid Caution

According to Vance, the current ceasefire remains intact despite recent exchanges of attacks between Washington and Tehran. He said the United States still reserves the right to carry out defensive military action if needed, while continuing to pursue diplomacy. The remarks suggest the Trump administration is trying to keep negotiations alive without giving final approval before the language and nuclear-related concerns are resolved.

The discussions come at a sensitive moment for US Iran talks, with nuclear talks, uranium concerns, diplomacy and Middle East security all shaping the next steps. Vance said he felt positive about the direction of the negotiations but would not guarantee that a final agreement would be reached. For now, the proposed extension remains dependent on further progress and Trump’s approval.
