Greenland Protest in Nuuk Targets Trump’s US Control Remarks

A Greenland protest in Nuuk drew several hundred people on Thursday, May 21, 2026, as residents opposed President Donald Trump’s repeated remarks about greater U.S. control over the Arctic island.

The demonstration took place as the United States opened a larger consulate office in downtown Nuuk, moving from a smaller building on the outskirts of the capital. For many Greenlanders, the new diplomatic space became a symbol of Washington’s growing interest in the island.

Why Greenlanders Protested the U.S. Consulate Opening

Protesters carried Greenland’s red-and-white national flag and signs rejecting U.S. pressure, including messages such as “USA, stop it,” “Greenland belongs to Greenlanders,” and “We are not for sale.”

Some demonstrators turned their backs on the consulate building and observed two minutes of silence, signaling opposition to any outside effort to influence Greenland’s political future.

Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen and several other politicians declined invitations to attend the consulate opening, underscoring the sensitivity of U.S. involvement in the semi-autonomous Danish territory.

Trump Cites Arctic Security and Russia-China Concerns

Trump has argued that Greenland is strategically important for U.S. national security, especially as Russia and China expand their Arctic interests. Greenland’s location, mineral resources, and military relevance have made it a focus of renewed geopolitical attention.

U.S. Ambassador to Denmark Kenneth Howery said during the opening that Greenlanders would decide their own future and that the United States would remain a partner. However, many residents remain wary after Trump’s earlier statements about acquiring or controlling Greenland.

U.S. special envoy Jeff Landry also drew criticism after saying it was time for Washington to put its “footprint back” on Greenland.

For Greenlanders, the message from the Nuuk protest was direct: the island’s future should be decided by its own people, not by Washington, Copenhagen, or any outside power.
