Indian Navy Removes Warhead From MT Olympic Life Fuel Tank

Indian Navy specialists removed an unexploded missile warhead from the fuel tank of MT Olympic Life after the tanker reached Kochi, India, following a nearly 2,000-kilometer voyage from waters off Oman.

The recovery involved an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team from the Southern Naval Command and was described by India’s Ministry of Defence as a meticulously planned, high-risk operation.

Missile Warhead Lodged in MT Olympic Life Fuel Tank

The Marshall Islands-flagged tanker was sailing from Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates to Kochi when an explosion struck its hull off Oman on Tuesday, May 26, 2026.

The projectile pierced the vessel’s exterior, passed through several structural compartments and became lodged inside a fuel tank. MT Olympic Life remained operational and continued toward Kochi before authorities were notified that unexploded ordnance was onboard. The ministry said no Indian nationals were among the crew.

How the Indian Navy Removed the MT Olympic Life Warhead

The response was coordinated through the Information Fusion Centre–Indian Ocean Region. After the tanker arrived in Kochi, the Southern Naval Command deployed its EOD specialists.

Because the warhead was inside a fuel storage compartment, the team used a phased procedure designed to protect the crew, the vessel and nearby port infrastructure. Specialists used diagnostic methods to identify and isolate the detonation mechanism before removing the warhead and related debris.

The recovered material was transferred to a secure facility for storage and examination.

Why the Tanker Warhead Recovery Matters

In its statement on Thursday, June 11, 2026, the Ministry of Defence said the operation was conducted regardless of the vessel’s ownership or the crew’s nationality. It linked the mission to India’s SAGAR and MAHASAGAR maritime-security approach.

The incident highlights the risks facing commercial shipping across the Gulf of Oman, Arabian Sea and waters near the Strait of Hormuz, a major route for global energy shipments. It also demonstrates the Indian Navy’s ability to handle complex explosive threats aboard merchant vessels in the Indian Ocean region.
