Strategic Focus at G7 Summit
French President Emmanuel Macron announced that the upcoming G7 Summit, taking place from June 15–17 in Evian-les-Bains, will dedicate Monday’s sessions to discussing the long-term reopening of the strategic Strait of Hormuz. This follows a recently brokered framework agreement between the United States and Iran, aimed at ending hostilities in West Asia. Macron emphasized that the summit will examine the consequences of this agreement, support Lebanon, ensure the reopening of Hormuz, and finalize a nuclear and ballistic accord with Iran.
International Collaboration and Implementation
Macron described the preliminary memorandum of understanding as the outcome of collaborative diplomatic efforts involving multiple global partners. In a subsequent statement, he called for "rapid and complete implementation by all belligerents," stressing that the immediate resumption of maritime traffic without restrictions or tolls is crucial for regional stability and the global economy. France and the United Kingdom have established a joint international maritime mission to support safe navigation through the waterway.
U.S. and Regional Diplomacy
The diplomatic breakthrough was announced by U.S. President Donald Trump, who declared the framework deal complete and ordered the removal of the U.S. naval blockade on Iranian ports. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif confirmed that mediators secured an immediate and permanent halt to military operations across all fronts, including Lebanon. Iran’s Supreme National Security Council also confirmed that hostilities would cease permanently, signaling a major de-escalation.
Verification and Oversight
While a formal signing ceremony is scheduled for June 19 in Switzerland, G7 leaders, including United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer, emphasized that the restoration of free and toll-free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz must be guaranteed. Monday’s working sessions are expected to focus on verification procedures and broader security implications of the accord, highlighting the summit’s critical role in ensuring long-term regional stability and global trade security.
