Tungabhadra gates inaugurated in Hosapete by three CMs

According to reports from June 25, 2026, leaders from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka gathered in Hosapete (Hospet), Karnataka, ahead of the inauguration of the newly installed gates at the Tungabhadra Dam. The event was attended by Union Jal Shakti Minister C. R. Patil, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, and Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar.

As reported, the leaders formally inaugurated different spillway gates:

  • C. R. Patil — Gate No. 17
  • D. K. Shivakumar — Gate No. 18
  • N. Chandrababu Naidu — Gate No. 19
  • A. Revanth Reddy — Gate No. 20

The inauguration marks the completion of a major restoration and modernization effort following the failure of Gate No. 19 during floods in 2024. All 33 spillway gates were replaced at a cost of about ₹51 crore, improving the safety and operational capacity of the reservoir.

The gathering was also notable because it brought together senior leaders of three states that share interests in the Tungabhadra river basin, with discussions reportedly touching on water management and interstate coordination.

Political Significance and Courtesy Meeting

Ahead of the inauguration, the leaders held a courtesy meeting in Hosapete, which served as a platform for informal dialogue on inter-state coordination. Although no formal policy announcements were made, the meeting carried symbolic weight amid ongoing discussions on river water sharing and regional development priorities.

The presence of leaders from three politically significant states also reflected the strategic importance of maintaining cooperative engagement on shared water resources. The event avoided public disagreement and instead projected a coordinated front on infrastructure development.

Shared Resource Management and Future Outlook

The Tungabhadra Project continues to play a crucial role in irrigation across Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. With the latest gate upgrades, the focus now shifts to operational efficiency and long-term maintenance coordination between the states.

While the inauguration did not directly address unresolved water-sharing disputes, it reinforced the need for structured collaboration. Experts note that such joint appearances, though ceremonial, often help stabilize communication channels between states with competing agricultural demands. The Hosapete event therefore stands as both an infrastructure milestone and a political signal of cooperation in managing one of South India’s key river systems.
