Germany EU Blue Card 2026 rules allow qualified non-EU professionals to live and work in Germany if they have an eligible job offer, recognized qualifications and the required salary.
The residence permit also provides easier family reunification and a faster route to a German settlement permit, commonly described as permanent residence.
Germany EU Blue Card 2026 salary thresholds
The standard minimum salary is €50,700 gross per year in 2026. A reduced threshold of €45,934.20 applies to recognized shortage occupations and recent graduates who completed their qualifying degree or equivalent credential within the previous three years.
Approval from Germany’s Federal Employment Agency is required for the reduced-salary route. The salary figures are adjusted annually, according to Germany’s official “Make it in Germany” portal.
Certain IT professionals may qualify without a university degree. They must have an academic-level IT position lasting at least six months, earn at least €45,934.20 and demonstrate three years of relevant professional experience gained within the previous seven years.
Eligibility and application process
Applicants generally need a German employment contract or binding job offer lasting at least six months. The position must correspond to the applicant’s qualification, while regulated professions require the appropriate professional license.
Eligible credentials include a German university degree, a comparable foreign degree or a qualifying tertiary credential involving at least three years of study or training.
Most applicants must obtain an employment visa before traveling to Germany. Citizens of Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, the United Kingdom and the United States may enter without a visa and apply in Germany, but they cannot begin employment until the Blue Card is issued.
Permanent residence and family benefits
Blue Card holders may qualify for a settlement permit after 27 months of eligible employment and pension contributions with A1-level German. The period is reduced to 21 months for applicants with B1-level German, provided the remaining legal conditions are satisfied.
Spouses may join without proving German-language ability before arrival and can receive unrestricted permission to work.
