Trump’s Iran funeral remark sparks backlash
US President Donald Trump said Iran’s senior leadership had gathered in one place during funeral ceremonies for former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, triggering a sharp response from Tehran. Speaking to Axios, Trump said he had been closely watching the state-organised mourning events and suggested the gathering created a possible military opening, though he added that Washington would not act because diplomacy remained active.
“They are all there,” Trump said, claiming Iran’s top leaders could be taken out with “one shot.” He added that such an action would leave the United States with “nobody to negotiate with.” The remarks came after Khamenei’s death during the US-Israeli war on Iran, making the funeral not only a mourning event but also a major political test for Iran’s leadership transition.
Trump questions Tehran funeral crowds
Trump also questioned images of large crowds grieving in Tehran. He said he was surprised to see mourners because he believed many Iranians opposed Khamenei, suggesting some of the grief could be “fake tears.” The comment added fresh tension at a time when both countries are trying to avoid immediate military escalation.
The US president further claimed Iran was eager to reach an agreement with Washington, saying Tehran was “begging to make a deal.” According to Trump, both sides agreed to pause negotiations for a week until the funeral ceremonies conclude. He also said neither side would take military action during that period.
Iran hits back as succession questions grow
Iran responded strongly to Trump’s comments. In a post on X, Iran’s embassy in Armenia condemned the remarks and accused Trump of failing to understand Iran’s history, civilisation and national sentiment.
Tens of thousands of mourners gathered at a major outdoor prayer complex in Tehran, where coffins carrying Khamenei and members of his family were displayed. Many attendees dressed in black waved Iranian flags and held portraits of Khamenei and his son and successor, Mojtaba Khamenei. Iranian authorities framed the week-long ceremonies as a show of loyalty to the Islamic Republic during one of its most sensitive transitions in years.
After lying in state indoors for senior officials and foreign dignitaries, Khamenei’s coffin was moved outdoors under glass alongside coffins of several family members, including his daughter, son-in-law, daughter-in-law and 14-month-old granddaughter.
A major uncertainty remains Mojtaba Khamenei’s public absence. Although he has succeeded his father, no official public appearance or image has been released. Reports say he was injured in the same strike that killed the former supreme leader, keeping Iran’s leadership transition under close international watch.
The episode underlines how quickly funeral ceremonies in Tehran have become part of a wider US-Iran confrontation. While Trump’s comments signalled pressure, the pause in talks shows both sides are still leaving space for negotiation.
