Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed on Friday, July 17, that it had launched ballistic missiles and drones at US military aircraft stationed in Jordan, marking another dangerous expansion of the US-Iran conflict across the Middle East.
The IRGC said several American fighter jets and aerial refuelling aircraft were destroyed, while other planes suffered serious damage. However, neither the United States nor Jordan had independently confirmed those aircraft-loss claims when the Iranian statement emerged.
Jordan’s armed forces said its air-defence units intercepted three Iranian missiles targeting the kingdom on Friday. The official Jordan News Agency reported the interceptions but did not confirm that any US aircraft or military facilities had been hit.
IRGC attack targets US aircraft in Jordan
Iran described the operation as retaliation for overnight US strikes on several locations inside the country. Iranian authorities said those strikes killed at least eight people, although complete independently verified casualty details were not immediately available.
The IRGC also urged Jordanians to confront American interests in their country. Such calls risk inflaming domestic tensions in Jordan, which hosts US military personnel and maintains a close security partnership with Washington.
Iranian officials further claimed that military sites or US-linked facilities in Kuwait, Syria, Oman, Bahrain, Qatar and Iraq had also been targeted. The full scale and impact of those operations remained unclear, and official confirmation differed across the affected countries.
Jordan missile attack raises regional risks
The attack places Jordan in an increasingly difficult position as Iranian missiles and drones cross or target regional airspace. Amman has repeatedly said it will defend its territory and will not allow the country to become a battlefield for competing powers.
Jordanian authorities previously condemned Iranian attacks against Jordan and neighbouring Gulf states. Friday’s interception of three missiles indicates that the kingdom’s air-defence systems remain active as the conflict spreads beyond Iran and direct US military positions.
US Central Command had not publicly confirmed the destruction of fighter jets or refuelling aircraft in Jordan. Without satellite evidence, aircraft records or confirmation from American and Jordanian defence officials, the IRGC’s damage assessment should be treated as an unverified military claim.
Iran power crisis follows US strikes
Iran’s Energy Ministry separately urged citizens to reduce electricity consumption after attacks damaged energy infrastructure in the country’s south and placed additional pressure on the power grid.
Authorities asked residents to switch off air conditioners where possible, despite extreme summer temperatures. The ministry said reduced consumption was necessary to maintain stable supplies in southern provinces affected by heat and attacks on electricity facilities.
Damage to power infrastructure could intensify civilian hardship, disrupt water systems and affect hospitals, businesses and communications. It also shows how the conflict is moving beyond military targets and creating wider risks for essential public services.
US-Iran strikes increase civilian casualties
Iran’s Health Ministry said at least 38 people had been killed and more than 400 injured in US attacks since fighting resumed on June 22. Ministry spokesperson Hossein Kermanpour said the casualties included women and people under 18.
Those figures came from Iranian authorities and could not be independently verified. The widening casualty count, attacks on infrastructure and strikes across several countries underline the growing risk of a prolonged regional war.
The IRGC attack claim, Jordan’s confirmed missile interceptions and continuing US operations show that military escalation remains high. Any verified destruction of American aircraft would represent a significant development, but until defence officials release evidence, reports of extensive aircraft losses require cautious attribution.
