Tamil rapper Therukkural Arivu was detained by police on Tuesday after attempting to stage an anti-NEET demonstration outside the Tamil Nadu Secretariat in Chennai. The artist reportedly demanded stronger action from the state government against the national medical entrance examination and sought the complete removal of NEET.
Police intervened while Arivu was protesting near the Secretariat and took him into custody. Videos of the detention quickly circulated on social media, prompting questions about whether the authorities had used an unnecessarily strict approach against an artist raising a politically sensitive issue. Reports said Arivu was subsequently released and brought back to the Secretariat.
NEET has remained a major political and social issue in Tamil Nadu, where several parties, student groups and activists have repeatedly opposed the examination. Critics argue that the system places students from rural areas, government schools and economically weaker families at a disadvantage.
The situation took a significant turn when Chief Minister Vijay met Arivu personally at the Secretariat. Reports said the rapper was invited for a discussion after his detention, allowing him to explain his concerns about NEET and the reasons behind his sudden protest.
During the meeting, Vijay reportedly discussed his government’s position on NEET and the legal and political steps being considered to challenge the examination. The interaction transformed what had initially appeared to be a confrontation between the police and a protester into a direct conversation between the Chief Minister and the artist.
The meeting attracted attention because Arivu is not only known for socially conscious songs but has also been associated with TVK’s political messaging. He wrote and performed material connected to Vijay’s party campaign, making his public protest against the government particularly notable.
The detention drew criticism from Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin, who questioned the police action and argued that expressing opposition to NEET should not result in an arrest. His response added a political dimension to the incident, with the opposition attempting to hold the Vijay-led government accountable for the conduct of the police.
TVK supporters, however, highlighted Vijay’s decision to meet Arivu rather than allow the incident to develop into a prolonged confrontation. They presented the discussion as evidence that the Chief Minister was willing to engage directly with dissenting voices, even when protests were directed against his administration.
The contrasting reactions showed how quickly the incident became part of the wider political contest between the ruling TVK and the opposition DMK. While critics focused on the initial detention, government supporters emphasised Arivu’s release and subsequent meeting with Vijay.
Vijay built much of his election campaign around accessibility, public participation and direct engagement with ordinary citizens. His handling of the Arivu controversy is therefore likely to be judged against the inclusive leadership image promoted by TVK during the Tamil Nadu election campaign.
The meeting may have helped ease the immediate controversy, but the episode has renewed questions about protest rights, police procedures and the government’s anti-NEET policy. It has also increased pressure on the administration to clearly explain what practical steps it intends to take on an issue that continues to generate strong emotions among students and families across Tamil Nadu.
