Drone incident near Dubai airport triggers fire, flights temporarily suspended
A drone-related incident triggered a fire near Dubai International Airport on Monday, prompting authorities to temporarily suspend flight operations as a precautionary safety measure. Officials confirmed that the incident occurred in the vicinity of the airport and affected one of the fuel storage tanks, leading to an emergency response by Dubai Civil Defence teams. Authorities said firefighters were quickly deployed to the scene to contain the blaze and prevent further damage.

According to the Dubai Media Office, there were no immediate reports of injuries following the incident. Emergency teams worked to bring the fire under control while aviation authorities assessed the situation. The Dubai Civil Aviation Authority announced a temporary suspension of flights at Dubai International Airport, one of the world’s busiest international travel hubs, to ensure the safety of passengers, airline crews, and airport personnel. Travellers were advised to contact their airlines for updates regarding their flight schedules as authorities monitored developments.

The drone incident occurred amid heightened tensions across the Gulf region as the wider conflict in West Asia intensifies. Earlier reports indicated that falling drones had injured four people in an area close to the airport earlier in the week, raising concerns about security around critical infrastructure in the United Arab Emirates. Officials have since increased monitoring of airspace and security around key facilities.

Regional tensions have escalated following a wave of drone and missile attacks linked to the ongoing conflict. The United Arab Emirates has reported that Iran has launched more than 1,800 missiles and drones targeting Gulf nations during the current crisis. While the country’s air defence systems have intercepted most of the projectiles, the attacks have disrupted travel, heightened security measures, and raised concerns about regional stability.

Tehran has maintained that its operations are directed only at military installations and American-linked infrastructure, denying that civilian locations in neighbouring countries are being deliberately targeted. Despite those claims, the situation has placed Gulf countries on high alert, particularly around aviation facilities and energy infrastructure.

The latest incident also comes shortly after diplomatic consultations among regional leaders. United Arab Emirates President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman discussed the ongoing attacks during a phone call, describing them as a dangerous escalation that threatens the security and stability of Gulf Cooperation Council countries. The UAE president also held discussions with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al Sudani regarding the broader regional developments and their impact on security across the Middle East.

Authorities in Dubai said further updates on airport operations and the investigation into the drone incident will be shared through official channels as the situation develops.
