A controversial Trump post on India triggered diplomatic reactions from US and Indian officials, prompting efforts to reaffirm strong bilateral ties and address global political concerns.
Trump post on India sparks diplomatic pushback from US and India — Hours after Donald Trump shared a social media post containing derogatory language about India, US officials moved swiftly to contain diplomatic fallout, emphasizing the strength of ties between Washington and New Delhi and highlighting Trump’s personal relationship with Narendra Modi.
A spokesperson for the US Embassy in New Delhi reiterated that Trump considers India “a great country” and described Modi as “a very good friend,” signaling an effort to reassure both governments and the public amid growing backlash. The clarification followed strong reactions to the original post, which included excerpts from a conservative talk show hosted by Michael Savage.
In the referenced discussion, Savage criticized US birthright citizenship policies and alleged that migrants from countries including India and China travel to the United States late in pregnancy to secure citizenship for their children. The remarks escalated further by describing such migrants as originating from “some other hellhole on the planet,” language that drew immediate criticism.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) responded firmly, calling the remarks “uninformed, inappropriate and in poor taste,” and emphasizing that they do not reflect the longstanding relationship between the two countries. The MEA underscored that India-US ties are rooted in mutual respect and shared strategic interests, distancing official bilateral relations from the controversy.
Earlier, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal had briefly acknowledged the reports during a press briefing without elaborating, suggesting an initial attempt to downplay the issue before issuing a stronger formal response.
The controversy also drew international attention, with Iran weighing in. The Consulate General of Iran in Hyderabad defended India and China as “cradles of civilisation” and criticized the remarks, adding another layer to the geopolitical discourse surrounding the incident.
Despite the uproar, US officials’ rapid response reflects a broader effort to preserve diplomatic stability and prevent the episode from undermining cooperation between two key global partners.
