India-Canada Relations Strengthen at G7 Meeting
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney held detailed bilateral talks in Evian on the sidelines of the G7 Summit, focusing on strengthening cooperation across trade, energy, technology, education and defence. The meeting marked another step in improving ties between the two countries, with both leaders reviewing ongoing progress in multiple areas of engagement and expressing satisfaction with the momentum in diplomatic relations.
Growing Engagement Between New Delhi and Ottawa
PM Modi described the meeting as a positive exchange and highlighted that it was their fourth interaction in less than a year, reflecting sustained diplomatic engagement between India and Canada. According to official statements from India’s Ministry of External Affairs, both sides agreed to continue discussions through diplomatic channels and work towards a mutually convenient timeline for a future visit by the Canadian leadership to India or vice versa.
Canada has also extended an invitation to PM Modi for an official visit to Ottawa in 2026, signaling renewed intent to deepen political and economic cooperation. Officials confirmed that both countries remain committed to strengthening bilateral mechanisms and expanding structured dialogue on strategic issues.
Focus on Trade and CEPA Negotiations
A key highlight of the discussions was the progress on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). Both leaders agreed to accelerate negotiations and aim for conclusion by 2026. The proposed agreement is expected to enhance trade flows, reduce barriers, and open new opportunities in sectors such as agriculture, services, clean energy, and technology-driven industries.
Indian officials noted that trade and investment remain central pillars of the partnership, with both countries identifying strong potential for growth in emerging markets and supply chain cooperation.
Expanding Cooperation in Defence and Security
India and Canada also discussed expanding cooperation in defence and security, including the launch of negotiations on a General Security of Information Agreement (GSOIA). This agreement would facilitate the secure exchange of classified information and strengthen institutional collaboration between defence establishments.
Recent exchanges between defence institutions, including visits by senior delegations, were welcomed by both sides as a sign of growing trust. Discussions also included ways to enhance maritime cooperation and participation in regional frameworks.
Broader Strategic and Multilateral Engagement
PM Modi also expressed India’s support for Canada becoming a Dialogue Partner of the Indian Ocean Rim Association, reflecting broader engagement in Indo-Pacific and global governance platforms. Additionally, both countries announced initiatives aimed at expanding people-to-people ties and academic cooperation, including new platforms for dialogue and innovation exchange.
The meeting underscored a shared commitment to rebuilding and expanding bilateral relations, with both sides emphasizing long-term strategic cooperation in an increasingly interconnected global environment.
