Netanyahu rejects influence claims

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected claims that US President Donald Trump controls his decisions or that he directs Trump’s actions, saying both leaders act independently in the interests of their own countries. Speaking at the JNS Summit in Jerusalem on Sunday, June 21, Netanyahu addressed speculation over whether the two leaders influence each other’s positions on the Iran war and broader Middle East security issues.

Netanyahu said people in the United States claim Trump does everything he asks, while people in Israel claim he does everything Trump wants. He dismissed both claims, stressing that Israel and the United States are independent and proud countries with their own national interests. The Israeli leader said he stands for Israel’s security and sovereignty while maintaining close cooperation with Washington.

Israel and US ties under spotlight

Netanyahu acknowledged that he and Trump often agree on major issues but said disagreements also occur. He said the relationship is based on mutual respect for each other’s leadership, sovereignty and responsibility to their citizens. His remarks came at a sensitive moment, as US Iran talks and regional ceasefire efforts have raised questions about how closely Israel and the United States are coordinating policy.

The comments also reflected Netanyahu’s attempt to present Israel’s position as independent despite strong US involvement in regional diplomacy. He emphasized that Israel would continue to make security decisions based on its own assessment of threats, particularly involving Iran, Hezbollah and southern Lebanon.

Iran and Lebanon remain central

Speaking about Lebanon, Netanyahu said Israeli troops would remain in the security zone in southern Lebanon for as long as necessary to protect residents in northern Israel and the wider country. He said no political development would change that commitment, even as ceasefire discussions linked to broader regional diplomacy continue.

Netanyahu also repeated his vow that Iran would not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons while he remains prime minister. He said Israel had acted to remove what it viewed as an existential danger and claimed the war had prevented Iran from advancing toward an atomic bomb. His remarks underlined that Iran, Lebanon and Israel’s security doctrine remain central to his government’s position.
