Amaravati has been officially designated as the capital of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh following presidential assent to the relevant legislation, marking a significant milestone in a long-running political and legal process.
On Tuesday, April 6, 2026, President Droupadi Murmu approved the bill that formally recognizes Amaravati as the state’s capital. This decision concludes years of uncertainty surrounding the administrative future of Andhra Pradesh, a southern Indian state that has been without a fully established capital since its bifurcation in 2014.
The choice of Amaravati carries both historical and symbolic importance. The region is associated with ancient Indian history, including its role as a major center during the Satavahana period and its connection to early Buddhist culture. The modern capital project seeks to revive this legacy while positioning the city as a contemporary hub for governance and development.
However, the path to this designation has been contentious. Between 2019 and 2020, the state government proposed a three-capital model that would distribute administrative functions across Visakhapatnam, Kurnool, and Amaravati. This plan triggered widespread opposition, particularly from farmers who had contributed approximately 33,000 acres of land for the development of Amaravati as a single capital.
Legal challenges followed, culminating in a ruling by the Andhra Pradesh High Court directing that Amaravati remain the sole capital. The court’s decision played a critical role in shaping the final outcome, reinforcing the expectations of stakeholders who had invested in the original vision.
Since 2024, infrastructure development in Amaravati has resumed at scale, with major investments aimed at building government institutions, transportation networks, and residential areas. Officials describe the initiative as part of a broader effort to develop a modern, environmentally sustainable smart city.
With the formal approval now in place, Amaravati’s status as the capital provides administrative clarity and is expected to accelerate development efforts in the coming years.
