SpiceJet Plane Hits Akasa Aircraft at Delhi Airport, Both Jets Damaged During Taxiing

A serious ground incident at Indira Gandhi International Airport has raised fresh concerns over aviation safety after a SpiceJet aircraft collided with a stationary Akasa Air plane while taxiing on Thursday. The mishap resulted in damage to both aircraft, though fortunately, no injuries were reported.

According to initial reports, the SpiceJet Boeing B737-700 struck the Akasa Air aircraft during taxiing, damaging its right winglet. The Akasa plane, which was preparing to operate flight QP 1406 from Delhi to Hyderabad, sustained damage to its left-hand horizontal stabiliser. At the time of the incident, the Akasa aircraft was stationary.

An Akasa Air spokesperson confirmed that the aircraft was at a standstill when the contact occurred. Following the collision, the aircraft was immediately returned to the bay, and all passengers and crew were safely disembarked. The airline also arranged alternative travel for passengers heading to Hyderabad, ensuring minimal disruption.

SpiceJet acknowledged the incident, describing it as a “ground occurrence” during taxiing. The airline confirmed that its aircraft has been grounded for further inspection and necessary repairs. Both airlines reiterated that passenger safety remains their top priority.

Authorities have been informed, and a detailed investigation is now underway to determine the exact cause of the mishap. Aviation regulators are expected to closely examine ground movement protocols, communication procedures, and airport safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

This incident has once again brought attention to the importance of stringent ground safety practices at busy airports like Delhi, where high traffic increases the risk of such occurrences. As the probe progresses, more details are expected to emerge regarding accountability and preventive measures.
