Women’s Quota Bill Row: Smriti Irani Accuses Indian National Congress of Denying Women Their Right

A political war of words erupted after the Women’s Reservation Bill failed to pass in the Lok Sabha, with Smriti Irani strongly criticising the Indian National Congress and other Opposition parties. She accused them of celebrating the bill’s defeat and denying women their rightful representation in Parliament.

The bill, which required a two-thirds majority, fell short despite securing significant support, triggering sharp reactions from both the ruling alliance and the Opposition. The outcome has intensified debate over women’s representation and legislative priorities.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju also criticised the Opposition, calling the rejection a setback for women’s empowerment. He alleged that several members privately supported the bill but did not vote in its favour due to party pressure. Leaders from the ruling alliance further accused the Congress of delaying women’s reservation for years and prioritising political interests.

Congress leaders defended their stand, stating they support women’s reservation but objected to the current framework of the bill. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said the Opposition was willing to back a revised version that ensures effective implementation, describing the outcome as a “victory of democracy” while criticising the government’s approach.

The bill’s failure has heightened political tensions, with both sides expected to carry the debate beyond Parliament. The issue is likely to remain central to the country’s political discourse in the coming months.
