The Uttar Pradesh government has approved the renaming of Noida International Airport in Jewar as Narendra Modi International Airport, Noida-Jewar. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced the decision on Friday, October 9, 2026, following approval from the state Cabinet.
The airport, located in Gautam Buddha Nagar district near Noida, is one of the region's major infrastructure projects. It has been developed to improve air connectivity across Delhi-NCR and western Uttar Pradesh while providing additional capacity alongside Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport.
Announcing the decision, Adityanath expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his role in the airport's development. He described the project as an important addition to Uttar Pradesh's aviation infrastructure and said it could become a major aviation hub in the coming years.
UP Cabinet Approves Noida International Airport Name Change
The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet approved the proposal to name the airport after Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The announcement comes several months after Modi inaugurated the airport's first phase on March 28, 2026.
Commercial flight operations began in June 2026, marking an important milestone for the project.
The airport was developed through a public-private partnership involving Yamuna International Airport Private Limited, a subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG, and the Uttar Pradesh government.
Located along the Yamuna Expressway, the airport is expected to improve travel options for passengers from Noida, Greater Noida, Agra, Mathura and nearby regions.
The project is also intended to support tourism, business travel, cargo transportation and economic activity across western Uttar Pradesh.
The new name reflects the state government's decision to recognise the Prime Minister's association with the airport project.
Jewar Airport Capacity and Future Expansion Plans
The first phase of Jewar Airport was developed with an investment of approximately ₹11,200 crore and has an initial capacity to handle 1.2 crore passengers annually.
The airport features a 3,900-metre runway capable of accommodating large commercial aircraft, including wide-body planes.
It is equipped with modern navigation systems, including an Instrument Landing System, to support aircraft operations under different weather conditions.
Future development plans aim to expand the airport's passenger-handling capacity to approximately 7 crore annually.
The airport has also been planned as a multimodal transport hub, with road connectivity and other transport links intended to make travel more convenient.
As operations and infrastructure expand, Narendra Modi International Airport is expected to play an increasingly important role in serving passengers across Delhi-NCR and Uttar Pradesh.
The renaming marks another development in the airport's journey from a major construction project to an operational aviation facility serving the region.
