Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay is facing his first major political test within two weeks of the TVK-led coalition government taking office, after two brutal crimes involving minors triggered sharp criticism from opposition parties.
Two Crimes Put Law And Order Under Spotlight
The controversy intensified after the murder of a 17-year-old boy near the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple in Madurai and the rape and murder of a 10-year-old girl near Sulur in Coimbatore district. Opposition leaders have accused the new government of failing to act firmly on law and order, especially on the safety of women and children.
Annamalai Targets TVK Government
Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai criticised the Vijay-led government, alleging that criminals were acting without fear in the state. Referring to the recent crimes, he said the new government should move beyond celebration and focus on the realities on the ground.
Annamalai also urged the Chief Minister and the Tamil Nadu police to take immediate and strict action in the Coimbatore case. He said the government must prioritise the protection of women and children, a key promise made during the election campaign.
Udhayanidhi Stalin Questions Vijay’s Silence
Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin also attacked Vijay over the deteriorating law-and-order situation. He questioned the Chief Minister’s silence and referred to multiple incidents, including the Sulur case, the Madurai murder and other reported crimes in the state.
AIADMK Raises Women’s Safety Concerns
AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami also questioned the government’s seriousness in handling crimes against women and children. He reminded Vijay of his election promises and demanded stronger action to restore public confidence.
Minister’s Response Sparks Controversy
The government came under further pressure after Tamil Nadu Industries Minister Keerthana declined to answer questions about the Coimbatore rape and murder case during a media interaction. Her response drew criticism from BJP leaders, who accused her of being insensitive while discussing a serious crime involving a minor.
Police Briefing Video Adds To Backlash
Another video showing a senior police official smiling before a press briefing on the Coimbatore case also sparked public anger. Critics questioned the sensitivity of officials while dealing with such a grave incident.
Vijay Cites Fast-Tracked Pocso Case
Amid the backlash, Chief Minister Vijay defended his government’s approach by pointing to a recent Pocso case in Thoothukudi district, where justice was delivered within three months. In that case, a Class 12 student from Vilathikulam was sexually assaulted and murdered in March, and the accused was sentenced to double death penalty after an expedited trial.
Vijay said the quick verdict showed the government’s commitment to protecting women and children and ensuring fast justice in serious crimes.
TVK Government Under Pressure To Deliver
However, the recent incidents have put the new TVK government under intense scrutiny. After its major electoral victory, the government now faces pressure to prove that it can deliver on its promises, particularly on law and order and the safety of children and women.
