3 Livermore Starbucks Locations Close As Nationwide Coffee Chain Shuts Hundreds Of Stores

Livermore residents woke up to surprising news this week as three Starbucks stores closed their doors permanently, part of a larger nationwide move by the coffee giant. The Starbucks locations at 223 S. Vasco Road, 2550 Las Positas Road, and 4521 Livermore Outlets Drive all shut down Sunday. Customers searching the official Starbucks locator now find them marked as closed indefinitely, signaling that these locations will no longer serve the community.

This move is not unique to Livermore. Nearby Tri-Valley towns also saw Starbucks closures, including the coffeehouse at 398 Hartz Avenue in Danville, 11000 Crow Canyon Road in eastern Danville, and the popular City Center location in San Ramon. Even Pleasanton felt the impact earlier this summer when its downtown Starbucks shut down in July. Despite the closures, Livermore still has eight operating Starbucks cafes, ensuring that local coffee lovers can find a cup nearby.

Starbucks has confirmed that it will end the fiscal year with 18,300 stores in North America, down 124 from last year. CEO Brian Niccol, who joined Starbucks to help re-energize the brand, explained in a statement that several underperforming stores were identified during a review of financial performance and customer experience. Some locations were failing to meet revenue expectations, while others no longer offered the environment customers have come to expect.

The company emphasized that closing a store is never an easy decision. Each year, Starbucks regularly evaluates its network of coffeehouses, opening new ones while shutting down those that may not be viable due to lease expirations, financial challenges, or changing consumer habits. This latest round of closures represents a more significant shift, reflecting Starbucks’ focus on strengthening profitable locations and enhancing customer satisfaction.

Employees from the shuttered Livermore locations and other affected stores will be offered severance packages and career support to help them transition. For customers, the closures mean fewer options in some neighborhoods, though Starbucks maintains that its overall presence in California remains strong. With new store formats, digital ordering enhancements, and drive-thru expansions underway, Starbucks says it is evolving to meet modern consumer needs while ensuring long-term sustainability.

While the loss of three locations in Livermore is notable, the city still retains more than enough outlets for fans to enjoy their favorite lattes and cappuccinos. For many, Starbucks continues to serve as a community hub, and the closures mark the start of a new chapter for the brand in Livermore and across the nation.
