The USS Gerald R. Ford, the US Navy’s newest aircraft carrier, is preparing to leave the Middle East after completing a record 309-day deployment, marking the longest continuous mission for a modern American carrier. The vessel is expected to return to its home port at Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia, around mid-May, concluding an extended operational period that has drawn attention from lawmakers and defense officials.
The decision to bring the USS Ford back follows a demanding deployment that included multiple assignments across different regions. After departing Norfolk in late June, the carrier initially sailed to Europe before being redirected to the Caribbean and later the Middle East. During this period, it supported US operations including enforcement actions tied to energy security measures and broader geopolitical objectives.
Officials have indicated that the prolonged deployment has resulted in mechanical strain and accumulated wear, requiring extensive maintenance once the ship returns to port. Reports of technical challenges, including a fire incident aboard the vessel, have raised concerns about the long-term readiness of the carrier.
