The most important part of a Rakhi thali is not the decoration but the ritual items placed on it. A rakhi forms the centerpiece, while roli or kumkum is used for tilak and akshat, or unbroken rice grains, is placed with it as part of the blessing.

A small diya is generally included for aarti, while sweets such as laddoo, barfi or peda are offered after the rakhi is tied.
