The United States Justice Department is currently pursuing at least 300 foreign-born American citizens as part of an intensified denaturalisation effort, marking what officials describe as the largest such initiative in the country’s history. The legal process, which allows authorities to revoke citizenship obtained through fraud or concealment, has traditionally been used sparingly but is now being applied on an unprecedented scale.
A senior official confirmed that federal prosecutors across multiple field offices are actively reviewing cases, with the department moving “at warp speed” to identify and act on potential violations. Authorities have stated that the focus remains on individuals who allegedly manipulated the naturalisation process, with the administration emphasizing a strict stance on fraud prevention and enforcement.
Historically, denaturalisation has been reserved for extreme cases involving serious offenses such as war crimes, human rights violations, or deliberate misrepresentation during citizenship applications. During the previous Trump administration, just over 100 cases were filed over four years. However, the current effort is projected to exceed that figure within a much shorter timeframe, reflecting a significant escalation in enforcement.
To support the initiative, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services has reassigned personnel and deployed specialized teams nationwide to identify potential cases. Officials indicate that between 100 and 200 referrals per month are being forwarded to the Justice Department, creating a rapidly expanding caseload for federal prosecutors.
The department has outlined priority categories, including individuals linked to national security risks, financial fraud involving government programs, and other serious criminal activities. However, specific details about the individuals currently under review remain unclear, including the criteria used to identify them.
This development comes amid a broader immigration enforcement strategy that has defined recent policy direction, including increased deportation operations and expanded federal presence in major cities. With approximately 800,000 people gaining US citizenship annually, the scale of the current review process underscores a notable shift in how citizenship integrity is being monitored and enforced.
