Delhi rain alert: IMD warns of thunderstorms and strong winds

Delhi remained under a severe weather warning on June 12, 2026, after heavy rain lashed several parts of the national capital late Wednesday night. The India Meteorological Department warned that Delhi could witness thunderstorms, lightning, light to moderate rain and strong gusty winds as unstable weather conditions continued across northwest India.

The weather department said strong thunderstorms may bring wind speeds of 70 to 90 kmph in some areas, with gusts possibly reaching up to 100 kmph. The warning also mentioned the chance of hail, lightning and sudden spells of rain. The alert is linked to a Western Disturbance that is expected to keep Delhi, Haryana, Chandigarh and nearby parts of North India under cloudy and wet conditions till June 13.

Delhi weather forecast for June 12

For Friday, June 12, IMD forecast a generally cloudy sky over Delhi with spells of very light to light rain during the morning and forenoon. These rain spells are expected to be accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph, with stronger gusts likely in isolated areas.

Another round of similar weather is expected during the afternoon or evening. Commuters may face traffic delays due to wet roads, low visibility and possible waterlogging in some low-lying stretches. Residents have been advised to avoid standing near trees, temporary structures, electric poles and open areas during thunderstorm activity.

Hailstorm alert for Delhi and nearby states

The IMD also warned that Delhi, Haryana and Chandigarh may see hailstorm activity during June 11 and June 12. Several parts of North India are likely to remain under the influence of the same weather system, bringing repeated spells of rain, duststorms and strong winds.

The Delhi rain alert is important for office-goers, students and daily commuters, as sudden thunderstorms can disrupt road movement and public transport. People planning outdoor work or travel should check official weather updates before stepping out. The main risks include lightning, strong winds, moderate rain, hail and damage to temporary structures. Authorities are expected to monitor the situation as weather conditions may change quickly through the day.
