Exclusive Interview: Bhagyashri Borse on Playing Kumari in Dulquer Salmaan’s Kaantha

How do you feel about your role in Kaantha?
Playing Kumari in Kaantha is a blessing. It’s a complete performance-oriented character that gave me space to explore my emotions as an actor. I consider it my luck to get such a strong role so early in my career.

What was your first reaction when you heard the story?
When I heard the story, I was immediately excited. The narrative had depth and emotional intensity. Working with Dulquer Salmaan and Rana Daggubati made it even more special for me.

What kind of preparation did you do for the role of Kumari?
Since the film is set in the 1960s, I did a lot of homework. I watched several old Telugu and Tamil films and observed legends like Savitri garu and Sridevi garu to understand the mannerisms and emotional expressions of that era.

Was Kaantha your first signed film?
Yes, technically Kaantha was the first story I signed. However, due to a delay in production, I worked on two other projects before it started.

How was the shooting experience?
The shoot was an amazing experience. The atmosphere was friendly and creative. We all worked like a family. It was a journey that started in 2023 and has been very special to me ever since.

How was it working with Rana Daggubati?
Rana sir is extremely passionate about films. He talks only about cinema and gives his full energy to the project. I learned a lot from his dedication and professionalism.

Tell us about your director Selvamani Selvaraj.
Selvamani sir is a brilliant storyteller and a kind person. His writing reflects his personality. The way he developed Kumari’s character was so detailed that it helped me perform naturally.

You have worked with stars like Ravi Teja, Vijay Deverakonda, and now Dulquer. How has that been?
It’s an honor to work with such talented and established actors so early in my career. They’ve all been incredibly kind and supportive.

With Kaantha and Andhra King releasing close together, how do you feel?
I’m thrilled but also a bit nervous. Both films are very different from each other. I’ve given my 100% to both projects and hope audiences enjoy them.

What do you expect from Kaantha as an actor?
I hope audiences recognize me as a performer, not just a commercial actress. This film gave me the space to truly act and connect emotionally with my character.

What can you tell us about the music and production?
The music is fantastic. There’s a dance number I absolutely love. The production quality is top-notch, thanks to Dulquer sir and Rana sir, who are passionate about cinema and storytelling.

Are you open to acting in other languages?
Definitely. For an artist, there are no language barriers. If I get a good script, I’ll do it, though my heart will always stay with Telugu cinema.

What’s next for you after Kaantha?
I have upcoming projects in Telugu and Hindi that will be announced soon. Each film will offer something unique and help me grow as an actor.

How different are Kaantha and Andhra King?
Kaantha is a story within a story, a mix of art and emotion, while Andhra King is a fan biopic. My characters, Kumari and Mahalakshmi, are completely different. Both are close to my heart for different reasons.

Any final message to your fans?
I’m truly grateful for all the love and support. I hope Kaantha connects with everyone’s heart and that audiences enjoy watching it as much as we enjoyed making it.

All the best.
Thank you.
