A widely shared social media video appearing to show a humanoid robot working in a field has reignited concerns about artificial intelligence moving beyond software and office jobs into physical labour.

The clip shows a human-shaped machine using a hoe and apparently handling crops. It was shared with a humorous warning for technology professionals considering farming as an escape from AI-driven job disruption.

The video reportedly crossed five lakh views on X and attracted thousands of reactions. Some users described it as evidence that physical AI is advancing faster than expected, while others questioned whether the footage had been generated or altered using artificial intelligence.

Sridhar Vembu Said Human-Purpose Work Would Endure

The discussion has drawn attention to earlier comments by Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu about the future of employment in an AI-powered economy. Vembu argued that automation could disrupt traditional economic structures but that distinctly human and purpose-driven activities could retain their importance. His examples included caregiving, teaching, cooking, farming, classical music and other work connected with community or personal fulfilment.

His argument was not necessarily that agricultural technology would stop developing. Instead, he suggested that human-centred activities may continue to hold social and economic value even as machines improve productivity. He also warned that unequal distribution of automation’s benefits could place pressure on the middle class.

Video Authenticity Remains Unverified

The viral clip should not be treated as confirmed evidence that a fully autonomous humanoid robot is already farming independently. Social media users pointed to unusually clean crops, smooth human-like movements and other visual details as possible signs of generative-AI creation. No verified robot manufacturer, agricultural organisation or farm operator has publicly been connected to the footage in the available reporting.

Generative video technology can now create or modify scenes involving humanoid robots performing realistic movements. Recent research has also explored converting human videos into humanoid demonstrations, making online footage increasingly difficult to evaluate without an original source or technical verification.

Agricultural Automation Is Already Expanding

Even if the viral video is synthetic, the wider possibility it represents is not entirely fictional. Robots are already being developed for crop transportation, weed removal, spraying, monitoring and other repetitive agricultural operations.

Current farm robots are more commonly wheeled, specialised or remotely supervised machines rather than fully independent humanoids. Humanoid designs still face challenges involving balance, battery life, uneven land, weather, safety and the delicate handling of crops.

However, improvements in sensors, computer vision and robot learning could gradually allow machines to perform a wider range of physical tasks. Agricultural robots may first work alongside farmers by handling dangerous, repetitive or labour-intensive activities rather than eliminating human involvement completely.

The viral farm robot video therefore does not prove that farming jobs are about to disappear. It does, however, show how quickly public expectations are changing as artificial intelligence moves from computer screens toward machines capable of operating in the physical world.
