Trump further claimed that multiple components of Iran’s military infrastructure, including its air force, anti-aircraft systems, radar networks and leadership structures, had been severely weakened or eliminated. He suggested that the developments had left a leadership vacuum, remarking that “nobody wants to be a leader over there anymore.” While reiterating that the United States remains open to dialogue, he added that there was currently “nobody to talk to,” describing the situation as one that suits US interests.
The president also emphasised Washington’s longstanding position on Iran’s nuclear ambitions, stating that the US would not allow Tehran to develop nuclear weapons. He argued that such capabilities would pose a direct threat, repeating his belief that Iran would use them if obtained. Trump said US intervention in the region was necessary and suggested that stronger action should have been taken earlier to curb Iran’s influence in the Middle East.
The remarks were delivered during the annual presentation of the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy, awarded to the winner of the college football series between the US military academies. The US Navy secured the title in December 2025 with a narrow 17–16 victory over the Army, marking its second consecutive win. Trump had attended that game alongside senior defence officials, including members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and military secretaries, highlighting the event’s significance within US defence and military traditions.
