US Iran talks continue in Switzerland despite walkout

US Iran talks face early tension in Switzerland

US and Iranian negotiators continued discussions in Switzerland into the early hours of Monday, June 22, as both sides attempted to advance a fragile diplomatic process aimed at reducing months of conflict across the Middle East. The talks, held at the Swiss resort of Burgenstock, focused on regional security issues and efforts to prevent further escalation that has unsettled global energy markets and raised concern over the Strait of Hormuz.

The latest round of US Iran talks began with tension after Iran’s delegation briefly walked out of the venue following remarks by US President Donald Trump. Trump had warned Tehran against backing Hezbollah attacks in Lebanon, prompting a sharp response from Iranian officials. Iran’s delegation reportedly left after meeting Qatari mediators, using the move as a protest against the warning from Washington.

Iran responds after Trump warning

Iranian Parliament Speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said Iran’s armed forces were prepared to respond if the country was threatened. His remarks reflected the difficult atmosphere surrounding the Switzerland negotiations, where diplomatic engagement continued despite public warnings and political pressure from both sides.

After the brief walkout, negotiators returned to the table. A US diplomat familiar with the discussions described the talks as robust, with several issues linked to a possible nuclear agreement and wider regional security concerns. However, Iran’s state-linked reporting said Tehran’s nuclear programme was not discussed during the first 80-minute round, underlining the gap between public expectations and the actual agenda of the opening session.

Lebanon and Hormuz shape negotiations

One major focus was keeping the Strait of Hormuz open through possible deconfliction mechanisms. The waterway remains strategically important for global oil flows, and recent Iranian threats to close it have added urgency to the diplomatic push. Those threats followed recent Israeli military operations in Lebanon, making the Lebanon conflict a central factor in the talks.

Iranian officials have said progress toward a broader settlement will be difficult while fighting continues in Lebanon. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said a comprehensive agreement would be hard to reach without addressing conditions there. The talks remain fragile, but both sides continuing discussions suggests diplomacy has not collapsed despite the early confrontation.
