Modi-Putin talks and wider regional security issues are expected to draw particular attention.
Bishkek Summit
The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation will hold its Council of Heads of State meeting in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, with summit events scheduled across August 31 and September 1. The SCO has confirmed that 2026 marks 25 years since the organisation was founded, giving this year's gathering added political significance.
The summit comes as the SCO continues to position itself as an important Eurasian platform for dialogue on security, economic cooperation, connectivity and regional stability. India, China, Russia, Pakistan, Iran and Central Asian states are among its members, giving the organisation substantial geographic and geopolitical reach.
Modi Putin Talks
One of the closely watched meetings will involve Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin. India's Ministry of External Affairs has confirmed that the two leaders are scheduled to hold bilateral talks on the sidelines of the Bishkek summit.
MEA Secretary (West) Sibi George said the meeting would provide an opportunity for both sides to review the full range of India-Russia relations. The talks follow recent high-level engagement between New Delhi and Moscow, including discussions under the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission.
India and Russia maintain a long-standing strategic partnership covering defence, energy, trade and diplomatic cooperation. The Bishkek meeting is therefore expected to focus not only on bilateral ties but also on wider international developments.
SCO Anniversary
The 2026 summit carries additional importance because the SCO is celebrating its 25th anniversary. The organisation was established in 2001 and has expanded significantly since then, bringing together major Eurasian powers as well as several countries from Central and South Asia.
SCO officials have described the anniversary as an opportunity to assess the bloc's development and strengthen cooperation in areas ranging from regional security to economic connectivity and sustainable development.
SCO Leaders Meet
Chinese President Xi Jinping is among the major leaders expected in Bishkek, placing India, China and Russia at the same multilateral forum at a time of continuing geopolitical uncertainty. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is also expected to participate, while Pakistan will be represented at the summit.
The presence of India and Pakistan at the same gathering will also attract attention after tensions between the neighbours during 2025. However, attendance at the same multilateral summit does not by itself indicate that bilateral talks between the two sides will take place.

India Russia Ties
For India, the summit forms part of a broader Central Asia diplomatic tour. Modi will travel to Kyrgyzstan after visiting Uzbekistan, where he is scheduled to hold bilateral discussions aimed at strengthening strategic and economic cooperation.
In Bishkek, India's focus is expected to include regional security, connectivity and economic opportunity. The confirmed Modi-Putin meeting gives the visit additional weight, while any other bilateral engagements will depend on schedules and official confirmation.
With several major powers gathering in one place during the SCO's anniversary year, the Bishkek summit is likely to serve as an important platform for diplomacy at a time when conflicts, trade pressures and shifting global alliances continue to reshape international relations.
