Zelensky Slams Russia After 21 Missiles Strike Kyiv Amid Peace Talks
Zelensky condemned Russia after 21 ballistic missiles struck Kyiv following US-Russia peace talks on October 21. Ukraine reported two deaths and 34 injuries nationwide. The president also criticized Steve Witkoff's description of Putin as a humanitarian and demanded stronger air defenses.

Russian Ballistic Missile Strikes on Kyiv

Russian forces launched three waves of ballistic missiles against Kyiv beginning Wednesday evening. Zelensky said the attacks damaged residential buildings, energy facilities, railway infrastructure, metro facilities, shopping centers and businesses. A monastery was also affected.

Emergency crews worked across the capital to rescue residents, extinguish fires and assess the destruction. The bombardment came just hours after renewed diplomatic discussions aimed at ending the war.

Zelensky Criticizes Witkoff Putin Remarks

Zelensky responded sharply to Witkoff's earlier description of Putin as a humanitarian during their meeting in Saint Petersburg.

Using the phrase "Russian humanitarians" sarcastically, the Ukrainian president condemned Moscow's continued attacks on civilian areas.

He argued that the timing of the missile strikes showed Russia had made no meaningful change in its approach despite participating in diplomatic negotiations.

Civilian Casualties and Damage Across Ukraine

The overnight attacks affected 12 Ukrainian regions, according to Zelensky. Authorities reported two deaths and 34 injuries nationwide, including five children.

Civilian infrastructure suffered extensive damage, disrupting homes, transport networks and essential services.

Separate strikes also affected areas outside Kyiv, adding to concerns over civilian safety as Russian attacks continued across the country.

Russia Ukraine Peace Talks in St Petersburg

The missile strikes followed discussions between Witkoff and Putin in Saint Petersburg. The Kremlin said Russia was prepared to resume trilateral negotiations involving Ukraine and the United States in November.

However, significant disagreements remain over territory and future security arrangements. Moscow continues to demand Ukrainian concessions in the Donetsk region, while Kyiv rejects surrendering territory.

US President Donald Trump has expressed optimism about reaching an agreement, but both sides remain divided over key settlement terms.

Ukraine Demands Stronger Air Defense Support

Zelensky urged Ukraine's international partners to accelerate deliveries of air defense systems and interceptor missiles to protect civilians from further ballistic attacks.

He also called for stronger sanctions against Moscow and additional capabilities to destroy missile launchers.

The Ukrainian president maintained that diplomatic efforts must continue, but argued that negotiations alone would not prevent further attacks without sustained international pressure.

The latest strikes highlight the continuing gap between renewed peace initiatives and the reality of fighting on the ground.
