PM Modi Backs Trump’s Gaza Peace Plan, Calls It Pathway To Long-Term Stability

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has welcomed US President Donald Trump’s new initiative aimed at ending the Gaza conflict, describing it as a comprehensive pathway toward long-term and sustainable peace. Modi’s support comes after Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed on Washington’s 20-point proposal during talks at the White House.

In a statement posted on X, Modi said, We welcome President Donald J. Trump’s announcement of a comprehensive plan to end the Gaza conflict. It provides a viable pathway to long-term and sustainable peace, security and development for the Palestinian and Israeli people, as also for the larger West Asian region. We hope all concerned will come together behind this initiative and support this effort to end conflict and secure peace.

The plan, which seeks to halt one of the deadliest conflicts in the region in recent years, calls for an immediate end to hostilities. Within 72 hours, Hamas would be required to release all hostages it continues to hold, both living and deceased. Israeli authorities believe that of the 48 hostages still held, only 20 are alive. In return, Israel would release 250 Palestinians serving life sentences and around 1,700 detainees from Gaza, including women and children. Additionally, Israel would return the bodies of 15 Palestinians for every hostage body handed over.

The proposal outlines a phased withdrawal of Israeli troops, contingent on Hamas disarming and an international security force stepping in to maintain order. Israel would still maintain a “security perimeter presence,” interpreted by some as a buffer zone inside Gaza. The plan explicitly excludes Hamas from Gaza’s administration, instead proposing amnesty for members willing to renounce violence and permission for those who wish to leave the territory.

To ensure stability, an international security force would oversee Hamas’ disarmament and train thousands of Palestinian police, with Egypt already preparing personnel for this transition. Meanwhile, humanitarian aid would flow into Gaza under the supervision of neutral international organizations such as the United Nations and the Red Crescent.

The plan guarantees that Palestinians will not be expelled from Gaza and promises an international rebuilding effort to restore infrastructure and living conditions in the war-ravaged territory. While hailed by some as a significant diplomatic breakthrough, the plan faces potential resistance from Hamas, which insists it will not release hostages without a full declaration ending the war and complete Israeli withdrawal.

By aligning India’s stance with Trump’s initiative, Modi has underscored New Delhi’s support for peace in West Asia, a region critical to India’s energy security, trade, and diaspora interests. The coming weeks will determine whether Trump’s ambitious proposal garners broader support and whether it can bring a lasting resolution to one of the most complex conflicts in the world.
