₹10,000 Cr AI Push: Maharashtra Targets Startups, Jobs And Tech Growth

Maharashtra has approved a ₹10,000 crore AI policy to build advanced infrastructure, boost startups, create jobs, and position the state as a leader in ethical artificial intelligence.

The Maharashtra government has approved a comprehensive Artificial Intelligence (AI) policy with a proposed investment of ₹10,000 crore, marking a major push toward building advanced digital infrastructure in the state. The policy, cleared on Wednesday, aims to establish 6 AI Excellence Centres and 5 AI Innovation Cities while promoting innovation, research, and responsible governance in line with the India AI Mission.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the core objective of the policy is to position Maharashtra as a “Reference State” for ethical and inclusive AI development. The initiative is expected to strengthen multiple sectors including healthcare, agriculture, and manufacturing, building on the state’s digital economy currently valued at around ₹6 lakh crore. The policy also targets the creation of 1.5 lakh jobs and aims to support around 5,000 startups and MSMEs.

To strengthen AI capabilities, the government plans to deploy 2,000 Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) and develop 50 AI tools and use-cases to accelerate adoption across industries. Financial assistance will be extended to 5,000 MSMEs, including a 20 percent subsidy on AI implementation costs. Additionally, a centralized platform named ‘Maha AI Tools Hub’ will be launched to streamline access to AI solutions and resources.

The policy also focuses heavily on skill development and startup growth. Around 2 lakh youth and professionals will receive AI training under the Maharashtra AI Mission. A ₹500 crore AI Startup Venture Fund will be set up with equal contributions from the government and private sector. Startups will be eligible for grants up to ₹1 crore, while women-led startups will receive additional support of up to ₹2.5 crore along with extra incentives.

To encourage industrial participation, the state has announced multiple benefits, including up to 20 percent capital subsidy, 100 percent stamp duty waiver, electricity tariff subsidy of ₹2 per unit for up to 10 years, and reimbursements for patents, certifications, and international exhibitions. With a strong focus on ethical AI and inclusive growth, Maharashtra aims to emerge as a leading hub for artificial intelligence development amid rising global competition.
