IMO launches coordinated maritime evacuation
The International Maritime Organization has announced the start of a large-scale evacuation of more than 11,000 sailors stranded in the Persian Gulf following months of disruption linked to the Strait of Hormuz. The operation is being carried out in coordination with regional coastal states, including Iran and Oman, along with the United States and global shipping stakeholders to restore safe movement through one of the world’s most critical maritime corridors.
Safety assurances and navigation planning
According to the IMO leadership, safety guarantees have been secured after extensive verification of navigation conditions in the affected waters. The agency stated that contact has already been initiated with vessels to begin phased evacuation procedures, although no fixed timeline has been released. Officials emphasized that the priority is ensuring controlled transit conditions to reduce operational risk during movement through previously contested zones.
Regional coordination and phased transit routes
Oman’s defence authorities confirmed that the evacuation plan will be executed in stages due to elevated risks of collision and instability in the region. Temporary navigation routes north and south of the traditional Traffic Separation Scheme are expected to be used, as the standard routing system in the Strait of Hormuz has been deemed unsafe under current conditions. Ships will be assigned transit schedules individually under IMO coordination.

The IMO also referenced a recently concluded understanding between the United States and Iran as a key development enabling renewed maritime movement. The agreement is seen as a step toward restoring stability in the region after prolonged disruptions affecting civilian shipping. While evacuation efforts are now underway, authorities continue to stress that maritime security remains sensitive and requires sustained international cooperation to prevent further escalation in the Gulf shipping lanes.
