Laya on Her Comeback in Thammudu: A Unique Brother-Sister Sentiment- An Exclusive Interview

Laya, welcome back to Tollywood! What inspired you to choose Thammudu for your comeback film?
Laya: I felt Thammudu was the perfect film for my return to cinema. The story is unique, especially the brother-sister sentiment, which is rarely seen in such a format. After I got to know the character of Jhansi Kiranmayee, I felt it was a great role that matched my comeback, and I’m happy with how it turned out.

Can you tell us a bit more about your character, Jhansi Kiranmayee, in Thammudu?
Laya: Jhansi Kiranmayee is an officer who is both strict and responsible. She juggles her professional life with family responsibilities. The character is strong and doesn’t speak much, but when she does, her words hold power. She is a no-nonsense woman who does what she believes in, no matter the challenges. This role allowed me to show a different side of myself, unlike any other character I’ve played before.

You mentioned working in difficult conditions during the shoot. Can you share some memorable experiences?
Laya: Shooting in the forest was incredibly tough. We had to endure a lot of hardships. There were days when we shot barefoot, and the stones would hurt our feet. Several members of the team, including the director, fell sick. The physical toll of the shoot was immense, but everyone stayed dedicated and pushed through. Those tough times will remain with me forever.

How was it working with Nithiin on this film?
Laya: Working with Nithiin was wonderful. Despite being a star, he was very down-to-earth and friendly on set, almost like a kid who could connect with everyone. His performance in Thammudu will show a more mature side of him, which he handles with great ease. It was a great experience to share the screen with him.

How do you feel about the changing nature of film promotions and the industry as a whole?
Laya: A lot has changed since I first started in the industry. Earlier, promotions were mostly about audio functions and celebrating 100-day milestones. Now, we have massive promotional events, and there’s so much more engagement with the audience. Even when I was playing lead roles, I kept things simple. But now, I’m excited to take on meaningful roles, and the audience will remember my character long after they leave the theater.

What do you think makes Thammudu different from other films in Tollywood?
Laya: The brother-sister relationship in Thammudu is truly unique. It’s not something you see often in Indian cinema, and it adds a fresh layer to the story. Each character in the film has importance, and no one is there just for the sake of it. I think that’s what makes the film stand out.

What can we expect from your future projects?
Laya: I’m open to taking on meaningful roles, whether it's a sister or a mother. I want to be part of films where my character leaves a lasting impact on the audience. Right now, I’m working on a project with Shivaji, and I’m excited to see how it turns out. I haven’t signed any other films yet, but I’m definitely looking for roles that can be the driving force of the story.

Lastly, how do you feel about returning to Hyderabad for your film career?
Laya: Hyderabad is home to me. Even though I lived in the US for some time, I’ve always been connected to Hyderabad. I’m glad to be back, and I plan to continue working from here. Tollywood is where my heart is, and it feels great to be back in the city I love.

All the best!
Thank you!
