Iran denies laying mines in Strait of Hormuz amid rising regional tensions
Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi on Thursday rejected allegations that Iranian forces were laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global shipping route, stating that the claims were inaccurate and misleading. His remarks came days after the United States said it had carried out strikes against Iranian vessels allegedly involved in placing mines in the strategic waterway.

Responding to questions about the accusations, Takht-Ravanchi said Iran had not engaged in such activities and dismissed the reports outright. According to him, Tehran has been in communication with several countries regarding maritime movement through the Strait of Hormuz and has permitted ships from certain nations to pass through the corridor during the ongoing tensions.

The deputy foreign minister said that Iran had cooperated with countries that approached Tehran seeking safe passage for their vessels. However, he emphasized that nations which participated in what Iran considers aggression against the country should not expect similar access through the waterway. Takht-Ravanchi indicated that Tehran believes states involved in hostile actions against Iran should not benefit from secure transit through the strait.

The statement came after US President Donald Trump claimed that American forces had targeted and destroyed 28 Iranian vessels that were allegedly laying mines in the shipping channel. The claim further heightened tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important maritime routes for global energy supplies and international trade.

Takht-Ravanchi also said Iran’s primary concern was preventing another conflict from being imposed on the country. Reflecting on previous hostilities, he noted that a cessation of fighting had been declared after a brief period of conflict last June but alleged that opposing forces later regrouped and resumed hostilities months afterward.

Amid the continuing confrontation involving the United States and Israel, the Strait of Hormuz remains heavily affected by the conflict, with shipping operations disrupted and security concerns intensifying across the region. The situation continues to draw international attention due to the waterway’s critical role in global oil transportation and regional stability.
