Israel military investigates soldier over vandalism of religious symbol in Lebanon

The Israel Defense Forces has confirmed the authenticity of widely circulated images showing one of its soldiers damaging a statue of Jesus in Southern Lebanon, triggering criticism and prompting an internal investigation. The incident, which quickly gained traction online, has drawn attention amid ongoing regional tensions and a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon.

In an official statement, the IDF acknowledged that the photograph depicts one of its personnel operating in the area. The military described the soldier’s actions as serious and inconsistent with its expected standards of conduct. Authorities stated that the matter is being treated with urgency and is under review through the appropriate chain of command.

The image shows the soldier striking the head of the statue with a sledgehammer, an act that has sparked outrage, particularly among Christian communities. According to available details, the incident reportedly occurred in Debel, a predominantly Christian village where Israeli forces had been active during operations targeting Hezbollah infrastructure.

The IDF confirmed that its Northern Command is overseeing the investigation. Officials indicated that appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken depending on the findings. The military also emphasized that its operations are directed at dismantling militant infrastructure and not at harming civilian or religious sites.

In addition, the IDF stated that efforts are underway to assist local residents in restoring the damaged statue. The military reiterated that it does not intend to target religious symbols or institutions, highlighting the importance of maintaining respect for local communities during military operations.

The controversy comes shortly after a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon took effect, adding sensitivity to the situation. It also coincides with heightened tensions involving Israeli authorities and Christian leaders in Jerusalem, further amplifying the reaction to the incident.
