Russia Claims Drone Hit Nuclear Plant
Russia’s state nuclear company Rosatom claimed that a Ukrainian drone struck the turbine hall of Power Unit No. 6 at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. According to Rosatom, the blast created a hole in the turbine hall wall but did not damage key equipment at the facility. Rosatom’s chief Alexei Likhachev called the reported incident deliberate, adding that any attack near a nuclear facility could increase safety risks.
Ukraine Rejects The Allegation
Ukraine’s military denied Russia’s claim and called it a propaganda move. Kyiv said its forces did not attack Power Unit No. 6 and added that there was no active fighting or weapons use in that part of the frontline during the reported incident. Ukraine also said its forces follow international humanitarian law and do not target nuclear facilities.
Why The Incident Matters
The Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant is Europe’s largest nuclear facility and has been under Russian control since March 2022. The plant is located close to the war frontline, making every reported attack around the site a serious international concern. Even when core equipment is not damaged, any strike near turbine halls, power systems, cooling systems or plant infrastructure can create fear of wider nuclear safety risks.
IAEA Raises Safety Concern
The International Atomic Energy Agency expressed concern over the reported strike and requested access to inspect the affected turbine building. IAEA chief Rafael Grossi has repeatedly warned that military activity around nuclear sites is dangerous and must be avoided. The latest incident has again highlighted the need for restraint around Zaporizhzhia as the Russia-Ukraine war continues near sensitive nuclear infrastructure.
