Double Earthquake Sequence Strikes Venezuela
Two strong earthquakes measuring magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 struck Venezuela on Wednesday evening,June 24th 2026 according to data released by the United States Geological Survey. The agency confirmed that the second quake, measured at magnitude 7.5, occurred just 39 seconds after the initial 7.2 tremor, forming what experts describe as a doublet seismic sequence.
The earthquakes were centered at locations approximately 45 kilometres apart and occurred at different depths beneath the surface. The rapid succession of tremors resulted in structural damage, with reports indicating building collapses in parts of Caracas. The shocks were also felt in neighbouring Colombia, raising regional concern across northern South America.
Strong Tremor Recorded Off Northern Japan
In a separate seismic event, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck off the coast of northern Japan on Thursday, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. Authorities confirmed that no tsunami warning was issued following the quake.
The epicentre was located near the Iwate region at a depth of approximately 50 kilometres. While the tremor was widely felt, there were no immediate reports of significant structural damage or major disruptions. Public broadcaster NHK showed routine traffic movement in affected areas, with normal city operations continuing shortly after the quake.
Seismic Activity Along the Pacific Ring of Fire
Japan remains one of the most earthquake-prone regions in the world due to its position along the Pacific Ring of Fire, where multiple tectonic plates intersect. The country experiences frequent seismic activity, accounting for a significant share of global earthquakes each year.
Earlier in the year, the region also experienced a magnitude 7.7 earthquake offshore of Iwate, which led authorities to issue a precautionary advisory warning of potential stronger aftershocks. That advisory was later lifted after monitoring indicated reduced risk levels.
The recent tremor adds to ongoing concerns about seismic volatility in the region, although current assessments indicate no immediate escalation threat following this event.
