India-US leaders review strategic ties amid Strait of Hormuz concerns

United States President Donald Trump on Thursday said he had a “very good conversation” with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, describing the discussion as constructive and reaffirming strong ties between the two nations. The leaders spoke for approximately 40 minutes, focusing on regional security developments and ongoing geopolitical challenges.

Speaking to reporters, Trump referred to Modi as a “friend” and praised his leadership, noting that the dialogue reflected the strength of India-US relations. The call comes at a time of heightened tensions in West Asia, particularly surrounding the security of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy corridor.

Earlier, Modi confirmed the conversation in a post on X, stating that both leaders reviewed progress in bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors. He emphasized their shared commitment to further strengthening the Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership, highlighting ongoing collaboration in economic, defense, and technological domains.

The Indian prime minister also noted that discussions included the evolving situation in West Asia, with both sides stressing the importance of maintaining stability and ensuring the Strait of Hormuz remains open and secure for international trade. The region has witnessed increased volatility following recent hostilities, making maritime security a key concern for global stakeholders.

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor described the exchange as “very positive and productive,” signaling alignment between the two governments on pressing international issues. His remarks further underscored the diplomatic significance of the call amid ongoing global uncertainties.

The conversation marks the first direct engagement between Trump and Modi since a temporary ceasefire between the United States and Iran took effect on April 8 after weeks of escalation. Adding to regional developments, Trump also announced a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, indicating efforts to ease tensions across multiple fronts.

Analysts view the call as part of broader diplomatic efforts to stabilize the region while reinforcing strategic cooperation between Washington and New Delhi. With both countries playing influential roles in global affairs, their continued coordination is expected to shape responses to emerging security and economic challenges.
