Pierre-Henri Chuet became widely known in India during May 2025 after publicly commenting on Operation Sindoor. During his analysis, he questioned the effectiveness of the Indian Air Force's Rafale fleet and described Chinese-built J-10C and JF-17 fighter aircraft as "Rafale killers." His remarks sparked intense debate among defence experts because the Rafale, manufactured by Dassault Aviation, is considered one of India's most capable combat aircraft.
Those comments resurfaced after French authorities opened an investigation into Chuet's activities. While his previous opinions on military aviation generated controversy, the current investigation focuses entirely on alleged espionage-related activities rather than his public statements.
Chinese Military Training Allegations
According to information released during the investigation, prosecutors suspect Chuet travelled to China in September 2018 and August 2019 while he was still serving in the French Navy. Investigators allege that these visits were not declared to French authorities as required.
Authorities also suspect that he helped organize training sessions for Chinese military pilots through a South African aviation company. Investigators are examining whether he may have shared operational knowledge, tactical procedures, and expertise gained during his years of military service. Chuet served in French naval aviation until around 2021, flying both the Super Étendard strike fighter and the Rafale M from the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle. His experience operating advanced naval combat aircraft is believed to be one reason investigators consider the case significant.

French media reports indicate that officers from the Directorate-General for Internal Security (DGSI), France's domestic intelligence and counter-terrorism agency, questioned Chuet and searched his residence during the week beginning July 20, 2026. Although he has reportedly been released from custody, he remains under formal judicial investigation while authorities continue gathering evidence.
The investigation comes at a time when several European nations have increased efforts to counter foreign intelligence operations targeting defence technology and military expertise. Governments across Europe have repeatedly warned that advanced military knowledge has become a major target for foreign intelligence services.
