Can Indian students use an education loan for Canada proof of funds?

Indian students can use a bank education loan as part of Canada proof of funds. The application should show the sanctioned amount, disbursement terms, tuition coverage, remaining living costs and any additional support from parents, savings or scholarships.

Education loans can support proof of funds

Yes. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada lists proof of a student or education loan from a bank as accepted financial evidence. The loan must support a plan showing that the applicant can pay tuition, living expenses and transportation without depending on work in Canada.

IRCC does not say every loan approval letter automatically satisfies the requirement. Officers assess whether the money is available and whether the records support the declared study budget.

Documents to submit with the loan

Applicants should include the bank’s loan sanction letter, sanctioned amount, borrower and student details, course and institution information, disbursement terms and evidence of any tuition payment already made.

The records should show whether the loan covers tuition only or also housing, living and travel costs. If parents or savings cover a shortfall, those sources should be documented separately.

How much must the funding cover?

For applications submitted on or after Monday, September 1, 2025, one student studying outside Quebec must show C$22,895 for first-year living expenses. This excludes tuition and transportation. Quebec has separate requirements, and IRCC updates the amount periodically.

Applicants in programs lasting more than one year must show first-year funding and explain how the remaining years will be financed. A partial loan may therefore need to be combined with savings, sponsor support or scholarships.

Extra records for Indian applicants

The New Delhi visa-office checklist requests a funding reference letter when another person provides financial assistance. It asks for the relationship, occupation, contact details and number of dependants. It also requests income-tax returns for the applicant and parents for the previous two years, plus employment evidence where applicable.

IRCC’s public guidance refers specifically to a bank education loan and does not state a preference between secured and unsecured loans. Students using a non-bank lender should check their personalized checklist and visa-office instructions before applying.

An education loan can be a strong part of Canada proof of funds, but it should be presented within a complete and traceable study budget.
