Indian parents can financially support a Canada study permit application by documenting income, savings and their relationship to the student. The application should include a clear support letter, bank records, tax returns and a realistic plan for tuition and living costs.
Parent funding is permitted
Indian parents may fund a child’s Canadian education, but this is financial support rather than immigration sponsorship. The applicant must still prove that enough money is available, without relying on work in Canada, to cover tuition, living expenses and transportation. For programs longer than one year, the application must also explain how later years will be financed.
What the support letter should contain
The New Delhi visa-office checklist requires a reference letter from each person providing financial assistance. It should explain how the studies will be funded, the parent’s relationship to the student, occupation, full contact details and number of dependants. For an employed parent, the checklist also requests an employer letter containing the employer’s contact details and business address.
The letter should state the amount being provided, its source and the expenses it will cover. Those details should match the financial information elsewhere in the application.
Financial and relationship documents
IRCC lists four months of bank statements, education-loan proof, tuition or housing payment records, guaranteed investment certificates and letters from people providing money as common proof-of-funds documents. A funding letter must be supported by documents establishing that the money is available.
The current New Delhi checklist asks for income-tax returns for the applicant and parents for the previous two years. It also collects information about parents’ employment or business, net income in Indian rupees and its Canadian-dollar equivalent, and primary income sources.
Applicants may also provide documents connecting the parent to the student, particularly when names or family circumstances require clarification.
How much must be available?
For applications filed on or after Monday, September 1, 2025, one student studying outside Quebec must show C$22,895 for first-year living expenses, excluding tuition and transportation. Quebec has separate requirements, and IRCC updates the living-expense amounts periodically.
Families should retain evidence supporting salary savings, business income, fixed-deposit maturity, investment withdrawals or property-sale proceeds. Before filing, they should check that the support letter, bank records, tax returns, tuition receipts and study budget are consistent.
Applicants must follow the personalized checklist generated during the application process and the latest instructions for their visa office. IRCC may request additional information, while missing documents can cause an application to be returned or delayed.
