Israel and Lebanon Agree to Ceasefire After US-Led Talks

Israel and Lebanon have reached an agreement to work towards a ceasefire following US-led negotiations in Washington on June 4. The ceasefire is contingent on a “complete cessation” of hostilities by Iran-backed Hezbollah, according to a joint statement issued by the United States, Israel, and Lebanon. The deal also requires the evacuation of all Hezbollah operatives from the South Litani Sector, a key condition for implementation.

Pilot Zones and Regional Control

Despite the absence of formal diplomatic relations, Israel and Lebanon agreed to establish “pilot zones” where the Lebanese armed forces will exercise exclusive control. These zones are intended to remove all non-state actors and prevent further escalation in conflict-prone areas. Both nations are scheduled to return for additional discussions on political and security matters during the week of June 22, aiming to reach a broader and more comprehensive agreement.

Commitment to Sovereignty

The joint statement emphasized that the future of Israel-Lebanon relations must be determined solely by the two sovereign governments. It rejected attempts by any state or non-state actor to manipulate Lebanon's future, signaling a clear message to Iran and Hezbollah. The announcement coincided with ongoing clashes, with Hezbollah claiming missile attacks on northern Israel and Lebanese authorities reporting Israeli strikes in the south that killed at least nine people, including two paramedics.

Diplomatic Tensions and Iran’s Warning

The ceasefire breakthrough follows recent threats from Iran, which indicated that it could withdraw from secret peace talks with the United States unless Israel halted its military operations in Lebanon. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that any attack on Beirut could trigger a “full-scale resumption” of the wider Middle East conflict. He stated that Iran’s armed forces are prepared to respond if Israel targets Beirut, highlighting the interconnected nature of the conflict between Israel, Iran, and Hezbollah.

Maintaining Peace and Stability

The agreement aims to stabilize the region, reduce civilian casualties, and prevent further escalation. US-led diplomacy has played a central role in bringing both sides together, emphasizing that long-term peace requires adherence to ceasefire conditions and ongoing negotiations to resolve underlying political disputes. The ceasefire represents a critical step toward regional stability, although challenges remain, particularly in monitoring Hezbollah compliance and managing potential retaliatory actions. The coming weeks will be decisive in determining whether this ceasefire can translate into lasting peace between Israel and Lebanon.
