OpenDoor, the US-based real estate technology firm, is winding down its India operations, impacting nearly 250 employees. The move reflects the company’s shift toward AI-powered automation and smaller AI-native teams located in the United States. Executives emphasized that the layoffs are not due to employee performance, praising the India team for their contributions over the years. The transition underscores a larger trend in tech: global operations are increasingly leveraging artificial intelligence to replace manual workflows and reduce dependence on remote teams.

Kaz Nejatian, OpenDoor executive, explained that the India team was initially built to handle manual processes across fragmented systems. With the launch of OpenDoor 2.0, the company unified its systems and integrated AI tools to streamline operations. “Bringing these roles closer to our customers in the US allows us to serve them more efficiently while leveraging AI-driven workflows,” Nejatian said. He also recommended former India employees for new opportunities, highlighting their valuable experience.
