UK allows US to use bases for defensive strikes near Strait of Hormuz
The United Kingdom has approved an expanded role for United States forces to use British bases for defensive operations targeting Iranian-linked threats in the Strait of Hormuz, according to official statements following a ministerial meeting on Friday. The decision comes amid rising tensions in the Gulf region, where attacks on commercial shipping and critical infrastructure have raised concerns about global maritime security and economic stability.

Previously, London had permitted US forces to operate from British bases strictly to prevent potential missile strikes that could endanger British nationals or interests. However, ministers have now agreed to broaden that scope, allowing American forces to conduct defensive operations aimed at degrading capabilities used to target vessels navigating the strategic waterway. The Strait of Hormuz remains a vital global shipping route, and disruptions there have had ripple effects on energy markets and international trade.

A Downing Street spokesperson confirmed that the UK would not be directly involved in any strikes, maintaining its existing policy stance. Officials emphasized that the decision aligns with collective self-defence principles and is focused on safeguarding commercial shipping and regional stability. Ministers also stressed the importance of urgent de-escalation and called for a swift resolution to ongoing hostilities.

The discussions highlighted concerns over Iran’s recent actions, including reported strikes on unarmed commercial vessels and efforts to disrupt maritime movement in the region. British officials warned that such actions risk intensifying the crisis and further damaging global economic conditions, including those affecting the UK.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump sharply criticised NATO allies earlier in the day, accusing them of failing to support Washington’s approach toward securing the Strait of Hormuz. He stated that the United States is capable of ensuring the safety of the route independently, while expressing frustration over what he described as a lack of commitment from allied nations.
