The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the operation in Yazd focused on a uranium extraction facility described as critical to the early stages of nuclear fuel production. The site, identified as a yellowcake production plant near Ardakan, processes uranium ore into concentrated powder that can later be enriched for energy generation or potential weapons use. Israeli officials described the facility as unique within Iran and central to its nuclear supply chain, emphasizing that key production infrastructure was targeted during the strike.
In a separate operation, the Israeli military confirmed it struck the Khondab heavy water complex near Arak. The site has long been associated with plutonium-related capabilities and was characterized by Israel as a key component in potential nuclear weapons development. The strike reportedly targeted core infrastructure linked to the plant’s operations.
Iranian state media acknowledged that both facilities were hit, describing the attacks as carried out by U.S.-Israeli forces. Officials reported that the Khondab complex was struck in two phases, while the Ardakan facility in Yazd province was also impacted. Authorities stated there were no casualties and confirmed that no radioactive material was released beyond the sites, indicating that the damage remained contained.
Iran’s atomic energy organization reiterated that the strike on the Ardakan plant did not result in any radiation leak, underscoring that safety measures prevented broader environmental or public health risks. The confirmation from both sides highlights the strategic significance of the targeted facilities while also reflecting efforts to manage concerns about nuclear contamination.
