A controversial replay-assist decision became the biggest talking point of the New Orleans Saints’ final 2026 preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys after an apparent late hit on quarterback Spencer Rattler was overturned. Rattler Hit Near the Sideline The New Orleans Saints encountered one of the most debated officiating moments of their 2026 preseason during the Saints’ preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys on Friday, August 28, 2026. The incident occurred when Saints quarterback Spencer Rattler scrambled toward the sideline and appeared to step out of bounds before being tackled by a Cowboys defender. Officials initially penalized Dallas for a late hit, seemingly agreeing that the contact occurred after Rattler had left the field of play. The decision appeared straightforward at first, but it was reversed shortly afterward. Replay Assist Overturns the Penalty The penalty was removed through replay assistance, although there was no formal announcement indicating that a booth review had taken place. The reversal surprised viewers and members of the Saints’ broadcast team. Broadcaster Joel Meyers questioned how the hit could be considered legal when Rattler appeared to be heading out of bounds and had little opportunity to protect himself. The lack of a clear explanation also added to the confusion surrounding the ruling. Replay Raises Questions Over Rattler Late-Hit Penalty NOLA.com Saints reporter Matthew Paras initially reacted by saying the hit looked like a penalty because Rattler was forcefully tackled while moving toward the sideline. After examining the replay more closely, however, Paras acknowledged that the quarterback may still have been in bounds when the defender began making the tackle. From that perspective, replay assist had enough visual evidence to remove the flag. The incident demonstrated how a single frame or foot position can determine whether sideline contact is judged legal or penalized. Rattler Responds With a Touchdown Rather than allowing the disputed call to affect his performance, Rattler responded on the Saints’ following possession. He again used his mobility near the outside, this time completing the play with a rushing touchdown that gave New Orleans its second score of the night. His response shifted attention from the officiating controversy to his ability to remain composed and make an impact with his legs. Although it was only a preseason contest, the sequence offered another opportunity to evaluate Rattler’s decision-making, toughness and athleticism under pressure. The overturned penalty remained one of the game’s most discussed moments, particularly because of the limited explanation provided at the time. Nevertheless, the replay appeared to show that the tackle had begun before Rattler was fully out of bounds. For the Saints, the more encouraging takeaway was the quarterback’s immediate response, turning a frustrating moment into a touchdown on the next drive.
